Canada Wildfire Smoke 2026 to Darken North American Skies Again

Canada Wildfire Smoke 2026 is once again expected to spread across large parts of North America, darkening skies and worsening air quality on Thursday. Weather forecasters say dense smoke from ongoing wildfires in Canada will drift over several U.S. and Canadian regions, creating hazy conditions and increasing health risks.

According to meteorologists, the smoke plume stretches from the Upper Midwest through the Great Lakes, southern Ontario, New England, and into New York City. Some of the smoke is also expected to move over the Atlantic Ocean before reaching eastern Canada.

The heaviest smoke is forecast to move south throughout Thursday, with New York and nearby areas likely to experience the poorest conditions during the afternoon and evening. Some forecasts suggest the smoke could extend as far south as Maryland.

When Will the Smoke End?

Experts say the widespread smoke has remained trapped near the ground because of the same heat dome responsible for extreme temperatures across the Midwest and Northeast.

Conditions are expected to improve over the weekend as a new weather system pushes both the heat and smoke away from the region. However, areas closer to the active wildfires may continue experiencing smoky skies for a longer period.

Where Is Air Quality the Worst?

The worst air quality is currently being reported in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Ontario, where the wildfires continue to burn actively. Major cities including Toronto and New York City are also expected to experience unhealthy air quality throughout Thursday.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says many locations affected on Wednesday could see similar—or even worse—conditions on Thursday.

Health officials recommend that people with asthma, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions avoid prolonged outdoor activities. Residents are also advised to stay indoors when possible, use air purifiers if available, and wear high-quality respirator masks when outdoor exposure cannot be avoided.

Air quality experts warn that an Air Quality Index (AQI) above 150 is considered unhealthy for everyone, while readings above 300 are classified as hazardous.
